From point cloud to CAD: How Kirioll extracts road markings

Three steps from a highway laser scan to CAD drawings, with every line within 10 mm of the paint.

You may already know Kirioll. But do you know how it turns a highway laser scan into CAD lines accurate to within 10 mm?

Kirioll has had its first live deployment on a section of the A93 in Bavaria. Together with Lang&Lang GmbH nad Vermessungsbüro Rink we identified ways to achieve additional savings while increasing precision.

The video walks through the pipeline, from the raw point cloud to a 3D model and drawings. Kirioll now reliably recognizes not only road markings but also further object classes along the road.

We started with markings because they are the reference for the rest of the model: every line sits within 10 mm of the paint in the point cloud, typically 3 to 5 mm.

How it works:
1. AI segments the point cloud, recognizes the objects and builds a precise mathematical model of them.
2. The 3D model and drawings are generated automatically, and a dedicated plugin brings the data straight into Civil 3D.
3. An engineer checks and completes the result. Every correction feeds back into the AI, so it gets better with each project.
